The police have accused one Hakeem Afolabi of reckless driving, which they said led to the death of a 30-year-old woman, Basirat Jimoh.
Afolabi, who drove a Honda Bulldog with registration number, EKY 508 BR, was also accused of injuring a 31-year-old pregnant woman, her four-year-old daughter and a yet-to-be identified woman.
The incident was said to have occurred on Saturday January 3, 2015, along Samuel Street, off Ayodele Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos. It was gathered that Afolabi escaped after the incident and did not report same to the police.
He was later arrested and arraigned on four counts before a Lagos Senior Magistrate’s Court, Oshodi.
The charges read in part, “That you Hakeem Afolabi, on January 3, 2015, at about 10.30pm, along Samuel Street, off Ayodele Mafoluku, Oshodi, in the Lagos Magisterial District, being the driver of a Honda Bulldog with registration number, EKY 508 BR, did drive same in a dangerous manner and consequently caused the death of one Basirat Jimoh, 30.
“That you caused injury to a pregnant woman, one Folasayo Lawal, 31, her four-year-old daughter, Alimat Lawal, and a yet-to-be identified female pedestrian who is still under intensive medical care.”
The police said the offences contravened Sections 27 Cap 124, 34; Cap 172, and 28 (1) Vol. 7 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2004.
Afolabi pleaded not guilty and was admitted to bail by the magistrate, L. O. Owolabi, in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The matter was adjourned till February 23, 2015.
